This is a tax for the privilege of doing business, not a regulatory license. San Diego also imposes a separate Rental Unit Business Tax on residential rental property owners. The tax is based on number of employees: $34/year for businesses with 12 or fewer employees, or $125/year plus $5.00 per employee for businesses with 13 or more employees.
